What is the difference between the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League?

The UEFA champions league(UCL) and the UEFA Europa league (UEL) are two tournaments hosted by UEFA and played by football clubs within Europe.

While the UCL started in 1955/56 season as the European Cup and it later rebranded in 1992 as the UCL; it is the most elite and best football club competition in the world.

The UEL started in 1971 as UEFA cup but was changed to the present format in 2000/01 season; it is a second tier competition in Europe.

And plans are underway to start a third tier competition in 2021 to be known as UEL-2.

In the present format, the best teams including the winners in each league represent their respective countries in the UCL,

While the next two teams go straight to the UEL.

Only counties like England, Spain, Italy and germany get to present 4 teams( though the 4th team get to playoff with a weaker team and most times qualify).

A total of 32 teams compete at the UCL while a 48 teams take part in the UEL.

The teams that finish 3rd in the UCL group stages are sent automatically to UEL to join in the next knockout stages.

After group stages in UCL, there's round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and the finals.

While in UEL, after group stages, there's the round of 32 (in which 8 teams from tne UCL join them at this stage), then the round of 16, to quarter, semifinals and finals.

Tne UCL are usually played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, while the UEL is played on a Thursday.

The draws for group and knockout stages are generally held the same day.

The winners of the Europa league gets automatic qualification for the UCL (if they dont finish in top 2 or 4 that season),

But if they do , then the runners take their place and go for the UCL the next season.

Both winners(UCL and UEL) get to play in the European super cup held in August at the beginning of each season.

The UCL winners represent Europe in the FIFA world club cupheld in December.

In UCL, real Madrid have 13 titles followed by A.C Milan and with a record 7 trophies, while sevilla have won the Europa cup for a record 5 times with Liverpool and Atletico Madrid 3 trophies each.

Current UCL holder is real Madrid who defeated Liverpool, while Atletico Madrid are current UEL champions after defeating Olympique de Marseille.

Conclusion:

The UCL and Europa league are two different European club competitions but the UCL is the most elite and prestigious because it involves the top european teams competiting.
